DJ Marlboro

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

DJ Marlboro, born Fernando Luiz Mattos da Matta in 1963, is a Brazilian DJ. He is regarded as one of the founders of funk carioca, a cross between electro, hip hop and Brazilian popular music, which also draws on African musical traditions. His first LP, Funk Brasil from 1989, marks the beginning of the Funk Carioca Movement.

Music and breakthrough

The idea came from the bailes in Rio de Janeiro, the parties where freestyle music was played. The audience could not understand English and therefore made Portuguese versions of the songs themselves, and Marlboro took that over by making Portuguese versions of American songs. He owes his nickname to a remote district of Rio, in the area called Marlboro Country, where he lived. He makes and presents the radio programme Big Mix in Rio. In 2004 he was introduced to a worldwide audience, when the German journalist and label boss Daniel Haaksman founded the label Man Recordings and put him and Edu K forward. Earlier, in 1999, he had already released Valeu Shock.

Influence

In this way an American style, by way of Portuguese versions at the bailes of Rio, became a Brazilian movement of its own.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to a track from Funk Brasil. Notice the heavy bass and the Portuguese vocals over the electronic beats.
