Movement

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Movement · After the death of Ian Curtis in May 1980, the remaining members of Joy Division decided to carry on under the name New Order. Who should sing remained unclear for a long time; in the end Bernard Sumner took on that role. The arrival of Gillian Gilbert made a more electronic approach possible. The producer was Martin Hannett again, but relations had cooled. He left the group during the production of Everything's Gone Green, and it remained their last collaboration.

The album is a transition: gloomy post-punk with synthesizers, dub-like experiments and the beginnings of electropop. ICB refers to Curtis. The reception was lukewarm, but later the record received much praise as a bridge between Joy Division and the dance music that was still to come.

Listening

Listening tip. In ICB, listen to the dark atmosphere of the song and remember that the title refers to Ian Curtis.
