Power, Corruption & Lies
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Power, Corruption & Lies is New Order's second studio album and was released on 2 May 1983 on Factory Records. After the debut Movement from 1981, the group used far more synthesizers. The album combines their post-punk roots with electronic music. Kraftwerk and Giorgio Moroder are cited as influences. The single Blue Monday comes from the same sessions, but was released separately and was not on the album itself.
Dark songs such as We All Stand and Your Silent Face stand beside lighter pieces such as The Village. One critic called 5-8-6 a literal translation of early house. Peter Saville designed the sleeve with a painting of flowers by Henri Fantin-Latour and a colour code instead of the band's name. The record received much praise on release, and a Rolling Stone reviewer saw in it a declaration of independence from Joy Division.
