Fender Precision Bass

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Fender Precision Bass · A double bass is large, quiet and awkward to transport. In 1951, Leo Fender released the Precision Bass: an electric bass guitar with frets, built as a solid body. Thanks to the frets, a bass player played ‘precisely’ in tune, hence the name. With an amplifier, the bass could finally rise above drums and guitars. In the 1960s, the bass guitar became a melodic instrument. In the Motown studio in Detroit, James Jamerson played agile, syncopated bass lines that form the heart of the hits.

Listening

Listening tip. Follow only the bass: does it play one note per beat, or a melody of its own with runs?
