Boy bands and girl groups · Every decade has its teen idol, with a recognisable face, a simple hook and a production that suits the medium; in the 1990s came the cast boy band and girl group. The Spice Girls were put together in 1994 through auditions after an advertisement, and became a brand. Wannabe was number 1 in England in 1996 and in the United States in 1997.
