Compact disc (CD)

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Technology

Compact disc (CD) · Philips and Sony developed the compact disc together, and it came onto the market in 1982. Music is stored on it as digital code: 44,100 measurements per second per channel, read by a laser. A CD does not hiss and does not wear out, and holds well over an hour of music. In the 1990s, the CD became the standard and the industry earned more than ever, partly because people bought their old records again. But a digital copy is exactly identical to the original. With a CD burner and a computer, the road to free copying lay open.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the silences and the quiet passages: do you hear hiss or ticks, as with a record or cassette?
