Northern soul

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

Northern soul · In clubs in the north of England, such as the Twisted Wheel in Manchester and the Wigan Casino (1973–1981), young people danced all night to fast American soul from the 1960s, often obscure singles that had sold little in America. DJs searched fanatically for rare records. The journalist Dave Godin coined the name northern soul in 1970. Gloria Jones's Tainted Love (1964) was one such record; Soft Cell later made a synth-pop hit out of it.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tainted Love for the fast tempo and the handclaps that people danced to in the clubs.
