Please Please Me

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Please Please Me · After their contract with EMI in May 1962, the Beatles ended up with George Martin at the label Parlophone. Their first single, Love Me Do, reached number 17, to Martin's surprise. He suggested making an album and, because the Cavern Club proved unsuitable for recording, chose an ordinary studio record. On 11 February 1963 the Beatles recorded almost the whole album in one day at EMI Studios. Later Martin added overdubs to Misery and Baby It's You, and the four songs from the earlier singles were included as well.

The record contains covers and original work by Lennon and McCartney. That band and songwriters were the same was unusual and marks the rise of the band that plays its own songs. In Great Britain the album stayed in the top 10 for more than a year, a record for a debut album. In the United States it was not released in this form. Critically it is still held in high regard.
