A Hard Day’s Night

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

A Hard Day’s Night · In the spring of 1964 the Beatles recorded their third album, around the shooting of their first feature film. During a break Ringo Starr came up with the expression a hard day's night, which became the title of the film. Lennon and McCartney wrote a song for it that was recorded at EMI Studios on 16 April. The first side of the record contains the film music, the second side songs that were written for the film but did not make it in. It is the first album consisting entirely of original songs by Lennon and McCartney.

The rock 'n' roll covers of earlier records are gone, replaced by short, lively pop songs with layered vocals, direct choruses and subtle accompaniment. On several songs George Harrison plays a Rickenbacker twelve-string guitar, a sound that influenced the Byrds and other folk rock bands. The title song, with its distinctive opening chord, and Can't Buy Me Love were number one on both sides of the Atlantic.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to the title song A Hard Day's Night and notice the opening chord, and then hear how the twelve-string guitar colours the rest of the song.
