The Pleasure Principle
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Pleasure Principle · Six months after Replicas, his last record with Tubeway Army, Gary Numan released his first solo album on Beggars Banquet in September 1979. The recording took place at Marcus Music Studio in London, while Replicas was at the top of the albums chart. It became his first number one in England.
Numan left out the electric guitar entirely. Together with plenty of synthetic percussion, that gave him the most electronic and robotic sound of his career. He used Minimoog and Polymoog, and added violin and viola. The lyrics are about technology and the future. Airlane is an instrumental opening number. In Metal, an android who wants to become human sings, and Complex reached number six in England. Cars became his biggest hit, also in America and Canada. The title comes from a painting by René Magritte, which Numan recreated on the sleeve with shiny, artificial objects. He toured with an enormous show featuring neon lighting and moving pyramids.
