Slash

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Slash, real name Saul Hudson, is a British-American guitarist, born in Hampstead in London in 1965. He grew up in Burslem in Stoke-on-Trent and moved to Los Angeles with his father at the age of six. His parents both worked in the entertainment world. He received the nickname Slash as a child from the actor Seymour Cassel. In 1983 he joined Hollywood Rose, and in 1985 Guns N' Roses, where he took the place of founder Tracii Guns.

Music and breakthrough

With Guns N' Roses he broke through worldwide from the late 1980s. In 1994 he founded Slash's Snakepit and in 1996 he left the band after growing tensions with Axl Rose. In 2002 he formed the supergroup Velvet Revolver with the singer Scott Weiland. Solo albums followed, including Slash in 2010, Apocalyptic Love and World on Fire with Myles Kennedy and the Conspirators, and Orgy of the Damned in 2024. In 2016 he returned to Guns N' Roses. His solo in November Rain ranks high in lists of the best guitar solos, and in 2004 Total Guitar put his riff in Sweet Child o' Mine in first place among the best riffs.

Influence

Slash plays blues-tinged hard rock with a warm, singing tone. In School of Rock he appears with the riff of Sweet Child o' Mine, which began as a finger exercise, and which shows how an exercise can become an immortal theme.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sweet Child o' Mine and notice the guitar riff at the beginning. Can you hear how it starts as an exercise and then carries the whole song?
