Appetite for Destruction
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Album
Appetite for Destruction · Guns N' Roses formed in 1985, played often in the clubs of Los Angeles and signed with Geffen in March 1986. In January 1987 the recording began at Rumbo Recorders under the producer Mike Clink, who was chosen after several other candidates. The budget was about 370,000 dollars. Slash searched for a long time for his guitar sound, and Axl Rose recorded his vocals line by line.
The songs come from the band's daily life. Welcome To The Jungle is partly about an encounter Rose had in New York, Mr. Brownstone about the band's heroin problems and Out Ta Get Me about Rose's youth in Indiana. The album at first received little attention and became a success only a year later, after tours and heavy radio play for Welcome To The Jungle, Paradise City and Sweet Child O' Mine. Critics at first responded in mixed fashion and now hail it as one of the best hard rock albums of the 1980s.
