Welcome

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Welcome is Santana's fifth studio album, released in 1973. It follows the jazz fusion of Caravanserai, but with a different line-up: Gregg Rolie and Neal Schon left to start Journey and were replaced by Tom Coster, Richard Kermode and Leon Thomas. Guests include John McLaughlin, Alice Coltrane on piano in Going Home and Flora Purim on vocals.

The album is far more experimental than the first four and produced no hit single. Robert Palmer wrote in Rolling Stone that the rhythm section sounds relaxed and at its best. Thom Jurek of AllMusic called it a jazz record with rock elements, ahead of its time and one of the band's most enduring recordings.
