Caravanserai

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Caravanserai is Santana's fourth studio album, released on 11 October 1972 by Columbia. It came out of a transitional period: it was the last record with several early members, and the music moved towards instrumental, progressive jazz fusion. It was recorded at Columbia Studios in San Francisco, in March, April and May 1972, produced by the guitarist himself and drummer Michael Shrieve.

The album sold less than the earlier hit records and reached number eight on the Billboard chart, but later went platinum. According to Shrieve, Clive Davis said the band was committing career suicide. Critics saw it as an artistic success. Ralph Gleason wrote in Rolling Stone that it spoke to the universality of man.

Listening

Listening tip. In Eternal Caravan of Reincarnation, listen to the saxophone intro with which the record opens and hear how calmly and instrumentally Santana begins here.
