Guns N’ Roses

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Guns N’ Roses · Guns N' Roses is an American hard rock band from Los Angeles, founded in March 1985 by Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin and Tracii Guns, among others, who came from the groups L.A. Guns and Hollywood Rose. Their two names were combined into the band's name. After initial changes, the classic line-up was settled in June 1985, with the singer Rose and the guitarist Slash. Later members included the bassist Duff McKagan. The band broke through with the album Appetite for Destruction (1987), which includes Sweet Child O' Mine. The mini-album G N' R Lies followed in 1988.

Music and breakthrough

In 1991 the albums Use Your Illusion I and Use Your Illusion II appeared, after which a long world tour followed, with incidents such as the Riverport Riot in 1991. Stradlin left during that tour and was replaced by Gilby Clarke, who played on the covers album The Spaghetti Incident? (1993). Chinese Democracy appeared in 2008. After years of open feuding, Slash and McKagan rejoined the band in 2016 for the Not in This Lifetime... Tour, which earned 563.3 million dollars. Guns N' Roses is one of the best-selling groups of all time.

Influence

The early sound united the rawness of punk with the loud guitars of hard rock and heavy metal. Slash plays famous guitar lines, Rose has a shrill, high voice, and the band sings about the raw side of life in Los Angeles. In the late 1980s Guns N' Roses brought danger back into hard rock, at a time when pop and glossy metal dominated the charts.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Sweet Child O' Mine and first follow the guitar line that opens the song. Then notice how the vocals become higher and rawer and how the band lets rip at full force at the end.
