I, Assassin
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
I, Assassin was released on 10 September 1982 on Beggars Banquet and is Gary Numan's fourth solo album. It came after Dance of 1981. He wrote and recorded most of it between January and March 1982, after a trip around the world in a small aeroplane. That trip, during which he also nearly crashed, gave him, by his own account, more self-confidence.
A major role was played by the bassist Pino Palladino, who played fretless. He brought the bass lines to the foreground, so that the fretless bass served as a lead melody for the first time. The sound is strongly rhythmic. Music for Chameleons and an American remix of White Boys and Heroes unexpectedly became popular in American clubs. Three singles reached the British top twenty, We Take Mystery among them at number nine. The British music press was negative. The album reached number eight.
