Highlife
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Highlife grew up in Ghana in the first half of the twentieth century out of West African rhythms, church hymns and the music of military bands and sailors. In the 1950s the trumpeter E.T. Mensah, the King of Highlife, turned it into dance-band music with horns and jazz influences. Alongside it existed guitar-band highlife, with several guitars interweaving short patterns. Out of highlife and jazz, Afrobeat later emerged in Nigeria.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to Queen's Visit for the horns and the guitars that interweave short, repeated patterns above a light, danceable groove.
