E.T. Mensah

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

E.T. Mensah from Accra was a trumpeter who, shortly after the Second World War, became the leader of The Tempos, a dance orchestra that blended swing with Ghanaian rhythms and calypso. In this way he shaped dance-band highlife and earned the nickname King of Highlife. The band toured all over West Africa. At Ghana's independence in 1957 his Ghana Freedom was heard, and he played together with Louis Armstrong.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to All for You: horns as in a swing band, but beneath them a skipping Ghanaian rhythm on the drums.
