The trumpeter Terumasa Hino was born in Tokyo in 1942. His father was a tap dancer and trumpeter, and Hino began as a child with tap dancing before he took up the trumpet. As a teenager he played in clubs for American soldiers. In the late 1960s he became known in Japan with his quintet; Hi-Nology (1969) was his breakthrough. In 1975 he moved to New York, where he played with, among others, Gil Evans, Elvin Jones and Jackie McLean.
