Yosuke Yamashita
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The pianist Yosuke Yamashita was born in Tokyo in 1942. In 1969 he formed a bassless trio that played free jazz, with the saxophonist Seiichi Nakamura and the drummer Takeo Moriyama; in the early 1970s the alto saxophonist Akira Sakata joined. Yamashita plays with great energy and hammers out fast, hard chords, often compared with the playing of Cecil Taylor. In 1974 the trio made its first European tour and played at the festival in Moers, Germany; that recording was released as Clay. Chiasma was recorded live in 1975 at the Jazztage in Heidelberg. The trio lasted until 1983. Later Yamashita wrote piano concertos, which he played under the direction of the conductor Yutaka Sado.
