Award Winning Drummer

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Award Winning Drummer is an album by drummer Max Roach with a 1958 session, released on the label Time. The album also appeared under the title Max Roach. Roach plays here with an unusual line-up: Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor saxophone, Ray Draper on tuba and Art Davis on bass. There is no piano.

The repertoire is partly by Roach himself, such as Tuba de Nod and Pies of Quincy. There are also pieces by band members: Coleman wrote Variations on the Scene and Sadiga, and Little wrote Gandolfo's Bounce. Milano is by John Lewis, and Old Folks is a standard by Dedette Lee Hill and Willard Robison. Ron Wynn of AllMusic called the group one of the best hard bop ensembles there is.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Tuba de Nod and notice the role of Ray Draper's tuba alongside Roach's drums.
