Deeds, Not Words

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Deeds, Not Words contains 1958 recordings by drummer Max Roach and was released on the label Riverside. Roach led a quintet with trumpeter Booker Little, tuba player Ray Draper, tenor saxophonist George Coleman and bassist Art Davis. The combination with a tuba is unusual in the jazz of the time. The record contains standards such as You Stepped Out of a Dream and There Will Never Be Another You, but also original pieces by the band members, such as Filidé by Draper and Larry-Larue by Little. The CD version has an extra track with bassist Oscar Pettiford.

AllMusic gave the album four and a half stars and called it good music from a group that wanted to develop beyond hard bop.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Filidé and notice Ray Draper's tuba alongside the trumpet: how does that combination sound in the ensemble?
