Mariachi and son jarocho
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre
Mariachi and son jarocho · In the nineteenth century, small groups with violins, harp and guitars such as the vihuela played in western Mexico, especially in Jalisco around Cocula: the mariachi. The word is older than the French occupation of the 1860s, so the well-known explanation via the French mariage is not correct. In 1908 the Cuarteto Coculense made the first recordings, and later trumpets were added. Meanwhile on the Gulf Coast the son jarocho grew up, with jarana, requinto and harp and dancers on a wooden platform.
Listening
Listening tip. In this recording from 1926, listen to how the violins carry the melody and the guitars strike the rhythm. Is there already a trumpet, as in later mariachi music?
