Chavela Vargas

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Chavela Vargas was born in Costa Rica and left for Mexico at seventeen. She sang rancheras, songs that usually sound with a full mariachi band, with only a guitar, and slowed them down into raw laments. Her first album appeared in 1961 with the support of José Alfredo Jiménez. The director Pedro Almodóvar, an admirer, supported her debut at Carnegie Hall in 2003, when she was 83.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to La Llorona: only guitar and voice, and long silences in which the words echo.
