Noche Bohemia

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Noche Bohemia was the debut of the Mexican singer Chavela Vargas. It was released in 1961 on the Orfeón label, and on the sleeve her name appears as Chabela Vargas. It was the first of more than eighty records she would make.

On the recordings the guitarist Antonio Bribiesca accompanies her, so that the sound remains very sparse: mostly voice and guitar can be heard. The record has twelve songs, six on each side, including pieces by Agustín Lara and José Alfredo Jiménez. The song Macorina later became one of her best-known numbers. The record thus marks the beginning of a long recording career, which would comprise more than eighty albums in total.

Listening

Listening tip. In Macorina, listen to how Chavela Vargas's voice and Antonio Bribiesca's guitar together carry the song.
