João Gilberto
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The singer and guitarist João Gilberto came from Juazeiro in north-eastern Brazil. In the 1950s he spent years in Rio searching for a style of his own. He found a guitar pattern that sums up the whole percussion section of the samba, and sang softly and precisely, without vibrato. In 1958 he played guitar on Chega de Saudade by Elizeth Cardoso and recorded the song himself; his album Chega de Saudade (1959) is regarded as the beginning of bossa nova. In 1963 he made Getz/Gilberto with Stan Getz. He was known as a perfectionist and rarely performed. He died in 2019.
Listening
Listening tip. Listen to the guitar and the voice: soft, precise and just slightly apart from each other.
