Chega de saudade

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Chega de saudade · Chega de Saudade was the debut album of the Brazilian singer and guitarist João Gilberto. Many people call it the first bossa nova record. The title means roughly enough of longing, although the word saudade has a richer meaning in Portuguese. When it was released, a newspaper wrote that Gilberto was one of the most musical singers in Brazil, and that his lack of volume was more than made up for by this. The paper praised his taste in the choice of melodies and the sobriety of his singing, for example in Desafinado.

The record continues to receive much praise in the twenty-first century. In 2001 it entered the Grammy Hall of Fame and the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame. In 2002 Brazilian experts placed it third among the best Brazilian records.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Desafinado and notice how soft and restrained Gilberto sings, without ever raising his voice.
