O amor, o sorriso e a flor

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

O amor, o sorriso e a flor · João Gilberto released this album in 1960 in Brazil on the Odeon label, with Aloysio de Oliveira as producer. The title means love, the smile and the flower and comes from the original lyrics of Meditação, a song by Antônio Carlos Jobim and Newton Mendonça. Almost simultaneously the record appeared in the United States under the title Brazil's Brilliant João Gilberto.

AllMusic calls the record of great importance, because it introduced Gilberto, Jobim and with them bossa nova to the American public in 1961, a year before Stan Getz had a hit with Desafinado. Several songs by Jobim, such as One Note Samba, Corcovado and Outra Vez, were heard here in North America for the first time.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Corcovado, one of the songs by Jobim that were first heard in North America on this record, and notice the restrained way of singing.
