Antônio Carlos Jobim

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Antônio Carlos Jobim, nicknamed Tom, grew up in Rio de Janeiro and studied classical piano. He worked as an arranger for a record company and, with the poet Vinícius de Moraes, wrote songs for theatre and film. With João Gilberto he laid the foundations of bossa nova in 1958. He wrote songs such as Chega de Saudade, Desafinado, Corcovado, The Girl from Ipanema and Águas de Março, which became standards all over the world. His harmonies are rich and often chromatic, with influences from Debussy and Cool Jazz. In 1967 he played on an album with Frank Sinatra. In 1974 he made Elis & Tom with the singer Elis Regina.
