The Composer of Desafinado, Plays

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

The Composer of Desafinado, Plays, from 1963, is Antônio Carlos Jobim's first album under his own name. It contains twelve instrumental arrangements of his own songs, arranged by Claus Ogerman. That was the beginning of a lifelong collaboration between the two. Jobim plays guitar and piano. The producers mainly wanted to show the Latin man with his guitar and objected to the piano, as the cover also shows.

The album opens with The Girl from Ipanema. In 1964 a recording of that song by Astrud Gilberto and Stan Getz became a worldwide hit. It also includes Corcovado, Desafinado and Chega de Saudade, nearly all of them jazz standards. Down Beat wrote that this record alone would fully justify the bossa nova. In 2001 the album was inducted into the Latin Grammy Hall of Fame, and in 2007 Rolling Stone Brasil placed it at number 58 among the hundred best Brazilian records.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to The Girl from Ipanema and notice how the melody is played by instruments instead of sung. Can you hear what the strings add to it?
