Orfeu da Conceição

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Orfeu da Conceição began as a play with music by the poet Vinicius de Moraes and the composer Antônio Carlos Jobim, which premiered in Rio de Janeiro in 1956. The play transposes the Greek myth of Orpheus and Eurydice to a contemporary favela during carnival. The soundtrack was released in the same year on a 10-inch LP on Odeon. It is regarded as the first album of songs by the duo Jobim and De Moraes, who together wrote the seven numbers for the play.

Jobim orchestrated the music and conducted Le Grand Orchestre Odeon, an orchestra of 35 musicians. Luiz Bonfá plays guitar, Roberto Paiva sings the songs and De Moraes himself declaims Orpheus's monologue. The record was recorded in hi-fi. The play later became the basis for the 1959 film Orfeu Negro.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Monólogo de Orfeu: here there is no singing, but Vinicius de Moraes declaims and dramatises the text.
