Amoroso

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Amoroso is a 1977 album by João Gilberto on which Brazilian bossa nova is given an orchestral treatment. Gilberto sings and plays guitar, accompanied by a string orchestra written and conducted by the German arranger Claus Ogerman. Tommy LiPuma and Helen Keane produced, Al Schmitt handled recording and mixing. For the album he received a Grammy nomination for best jazz vocal performance.

Most of it is in Portuguese, but for the first time he also sings in English, in the Gershwin song 'S Wonderful. That was new, because he did not speak the language and had long dreaded it. He also sings in Italian in Estate and in Spanish in Bésame Mucho. Four tracks are by Antônio Carlos Jobim and arranged by Gilberto. In 1993 the album was released on CD together with Brasil from 1981.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to 'S Wonderful and notice how his soft guitar and voice relate to Ogerman's strings.
