Outward Bound
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Outward Bound is Eric Dolphy's debut under his own name, from 1960. The quintet recorded it at Van Gelder Studio in New Jersey, with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, pianist Jaki Byard, bassist George Tucker and drummer Roy Haynes. Hubbard had shared a home with him when they first arrived in New York. The cover is by his friend Richard Prophet Jennings. The music is bebop-oriented and less adventurous than much of his later work. Of the three original pieces, G.W. is dedicated to bandleader Gerald Wilson, Les is named after trombonist Lester Robertson and 245 is a house number in Brooklyn.
Critics responded enthusiastically. Martin Williams wrote that from the first track it was clear that a fresh and important talent had arrived. PopMatters called the record the best place to start with this musician.
