Out to Lunch!

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Out to Lunch! is the only record Eric Dolphy made as a leader for Blue Note, and it was released only after his death. He played in a quintet with trumpeter Freddie Hubbard, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson, bassist Richard Davis and the drummer Tony Williams, only eighteen years old. According to Dolphy, everyone on this session was a leader. Shortly afterwards he left for Europe, where he died in West Berlin on 29 June 1964.

Hat and Beard is a tribute to Thelonious Monk, with wild bass clarinet playing and a percussive interlude by Williams and Hutcherson. In Gazzelloni, named after his flute teacher, everyone sticks to the theme for the first thirteen bars, after which freedom follows. In the title piece the pulse is suggested rather than played. Straight Up and Down was meant to evoke a drunken stagger. Critics count the record among Blue Note's best and among the high points of 1960s avant-garde jazz.

Listening

Listening tip. Listen to Hat and Beard and notice how the bass clarinet fans out wildly, and then hear the percussive interlude from the drums and the vibraphone.
