Peter Brötzmann

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

Peter Brötzmann, from Wuppertal, studied fine art and worked for the Fluxus artist Nam June Paik. He taught himself to play saxophone and clarinet. The free jazz of Albert Ayler and Ornette Coleman showed him the way. In 1968 he recorded Machine Gun with eight musicians, among them Han Bennink and Willem Breuker: one of the loudest and most violent jazz records ever, often seen as the sound of European free jazz. In 1969 he co-founded the label FMP in Berlin with others. Until his death in 2023 he performed all over the world, often with young musicians.

Listening tip. Hear the power of the saxophones: a wall of sound instead of a melody.
