Albert Ayler
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
Tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler from Cleveland played rhythm and blues and in an army band as a young man. In the early 1960s he played in Sweden and Denmark, still in the style of Sonny Rollins. In New York in 1964 he recorded Spiritual Unity for the small label ESP-Disk, with bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Sunny Murray. Ayler played with an enormous tone and a broad vibrato, and his themes resembled folk songs, marches and hymns. After that the group improvised freely and loudly. John Coltrane admired him and made sure that Impulse! gave him a contract. In November 1970 Ayler was found dead in the East River.
