South African jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

South African jazz · In the townships of Johannesburg and Cape Town, jazz mixed with local styles such as marabi and kwela. In 1959, the pianist Dollar Brand (later Abdullah Ibrahim), the alto saxophonist Kippie Moeketsi and the trumpeter Hugh Masekela formed The Jazz Epistles, the country's first Black bebop group with an LP of its own. After the Sharpeville massacre of 1960, the apartheid laws became stricter and many musicians left for abroad. In 1962 in Zürich, Dollar Brand met Duke Ellington, who had a record of his trio made. The Blue Notes of the pianist Chris McGregor played at the Antibes festival in 1964 and stayed in London, where the big band Brotherhood of Breath later arose. Ibrahim's Mannenberg of 1974 became a song of resistance in South Africa.

Listening tip. Hear the repeated, hymn-like chord sequence that keeps running beneath the improvisations.
