New London jazz

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Genre

New London jazz · Around 2015 a jazz scene of musicians in their twenties emerged in London, often with roots in the Caribbean or West Africa. Many of them learned to play at Tomorrow's Warriors, a free training programme for young musicians that the bassist Gary Crosby and Janine Irons founded in 1991. The saxophonist Shabaka Hutchings played in Sons of Kemet, with tuba and two drummers, and in The Comet Is Coming. The saxophonist Nubya Garcia, the tuba player Theon Cross, the drummer Moses Boyd and the band Ezra Collective formed the core of the scene. In 2018 Gilles Peterson released the compilation album We Out Here. The music mixes jazz with grime, Afrobeat, calypso and dub and is played for a dancing audience. In 2023 Ezra Collective became the first jazz group to win the British Mercury Prize.
