Shabaka Hutchings
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The saxophonist and clarinettist Shabaka Hutchings was born in London and grew up in Barbados, where he heard calypso and reggae. Back in England he studied the clarinet and entered jazz through Tomorrow's Warriors. He led three groups at the same time: Sons of Kemet, with tuba and two drummers; The Comet Is Coming, with electronics; and Shabaka and the Ancestors, with South African musicians. His music often deals with Black history and identity. In 2023 he stopped playing the saxophone in order to concentrate on flutes, including the Japanese shakuhachi.
