Theon Cross

The tuba player Theon Cross from London learned to play through Tomorrow's Warriors and played in Sons of Kemet with Shabaka Hutchings. He does not use the tuba as an accompanying instrument from the brass band, but as bass in dance music: heavy, rhythmic lines that recall grime and dub. He also played with Moses Boyd and Nubya Garcia. On his album Fyah (2019) the tuba is central, with Nubya Garcia on saxophone. In this way he showed that the tuba has a place of its own in the new jazz.
