Dudu Pukwana

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The alto saxophonist Dudu Pukwana grew up in Port Elizabeth and began as a pianist. In Chris McGregor's Blue Notes he became one of the most striking voices: his saxophone sounded sharp, joyful and full of kwela and mbaqanga. In 1964 he left for Europe with the group and settled in London. There he played in Brotherhood of Breath and led groups of his own such as Spear and Zila. That blend is easy to hear on Diamond Express (1975). He also played with British jazz and rock musicians. He died in London in 1990.
