Chris McGregor
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist
The pianist Chris McGregor grew up in the Transkei, where his father was a missionary, and studied in Cape Town. In the early 1960s he formed The Blue Notes, a group with Black musicians such as the saxophonist Dudu Pukwana and the drummer Louis Moholo. A mixed band was almost impossible under apartheid. In 1964 the group played at the Antibes festival and stayed in Europe, first in Zurich and then in London. There in 1970 McGregor founded the big band Brotherhood of Breath, which mixed township melodies, kwela and free improvisation. Later he lived in France, where he died in 1990.
