Don Cherry

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The trumpeter Don Cherry grew up in Los Angeles and from 1958 played with Ornette Coleman, who shaped his musical thinking. He played a small pocket trumpet. After Coleman he played with Sonny Rollins and Albert Ayler. On Complete Communion (1965) he made suites in which themes and improvisations merge into one another without a break. After that he moved to Sweden, where he lived with his wife, the artist Moki Cherry. He travelled widely and learned music from India, Africa, Turkey and Brazil. In this way he became one of the first to truly bring world music and jazz together, as on Brown Rice (1975). He died in 1995.
