Where Is Brooklyn?
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
Where Is Brooklyn? · On 11 November 1966 the cornet player Don Cherry went to Van Gelder Studios in Englewood Cliffs, New Jersey. There he recorded this album with Pharoah Sanders on tenor saxophone, Henry Grimes on bass and Ed Blackwell on drums. Blue Note released it.
It is avant-garde jazz in which group interaction matters more than a melody that sticks. The album consists of separate compositions, including The Thing and the almost eighteen-minute Unite. Critics found the music challenging and intense and praised the playing of Sanders and the rhythm section. Some found it less essential than the leader's earlier records, others called it an excellent entry point to the avant-garde. The free jazz trio The Thing named itself after a piece on this album.
