The Shape of Jazz to Come
From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work
The Shape of Jazz to Come · Ornette Coleman recorded this album on 22 May 1959 at Radio Recorders in Hollywood, after years of odd jobs and a sound that often met with hostility. It was his debut for Atlantic and his first record with the quartet with Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins. Producer Nesuhi Ertegun came up with the title. Pianist John Lewis had arranged a contract for the saxophonist.
The quartet plays without piano or guitar, so without a chordal instrument. Each piece has a short theme, then a number of minutes of free improvisation, and then the theme returns. The improvisation revolves around melody, not chords. Lonely Woman is one of the few compositions by the saxophonist that became a standard. Shortly after its release, the quartet began a long run of performances at the Five Spot Café in Manhattan, which provoked much discussion. The album helped launch free jazz and was added to the National Recording Registry.
