Organic Music Society

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

Organic Music Society was recorded in 1972 for the Swedish label Caprice. The trumpeter Don Cherry works here with a large company: flautists, a sarangi player, percussionists such as Naná Vasconcelos and Okay Temiz, and female singers including his wife Moki Cherry. Besides original pieces, there are compositions by Terry Riley, Pharoah Sanders and Leon Thomas, Dollar Brand and Vasconcelos.

The music mixes avant-garde jazz with influences from the East and from Brazil, in melodic song forms. A reviewer described the Organic Music Society period as the beating heart of Cherry's work, because the music came about collectively. In his view this was the record on which Cherry made himself most fully heard as bandleader and spiritual seeker. Others found the record rather vague and mainly one for fans.
