Evan Parker

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The saxophonist Evan Parker, from Bristol, fell under the spell of John Coltrane as a teenager. In London he played in John Stevens's Spontaneous Music Ensemble and with the guitarist Derek Bailey. In 1970, with Bailey and the drummer Tony Oxley, he founded the label Incus. Parker developed a technique of his own on the soprano saxophone using circular breathing: he breathes in through his nose while continuing to blow, so that he can play for minutes without interruption. This produces layers of rapidly repeated patterns and overtones. He also played for a long time in the trio of Alexander von Schlippenbach, and in 2017 with the young London duo Binker and Moses.
