From Saxophone & Trombone

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Work

From Saxophone & Trombone · This live album was recorded on 18 May 1980 at the Art Workers' Guild in London. Evan Parker plays soprano and tenor saxophone, George Lewis plays trombone. Incus Records released it later that year on vinyl. In 2002 a CD edition followed on the saxophonist's own label Psi, and in 2023 it was reissued on vinyl in remastered form on Otoroku, the label of Cafe Oto.

The album contains five improvisations, which have only a number as their title. One reviewer heard microtonal sounds and ethereal planes of sound, and praised Lewis for his exuberant virtuosity on the trombone and the saxophonist for his circular breathing. The Penguin Guide to Jazz Recordings gave four stars and called it one of the saxophonist's best recordings. The opening track received particularly high praise. Another reviewer spoke of two young masters, beautifully captured.
