Derek Bailey

From HitStory, the pop encyclopedia of School of Rock · Artist

The guitarist Derek Bailey, from Sheffield, worked for years as a musician in dance bands, in clubs and for television. From the 1960s he gave that up and in London developed a radically free way of playing, in which there is no longer any melody, chord changes or fixed metre. He used large leaps, harmonics and sounds from the strings. In 1970, with Evan Parker and Tony Oxley, he founded the label Incus, and from 1976 he organised Company, shifting groups of improvisers. His book Improvisation (1980) is a standard work. On Ballads (2002) he plays well-known songs after all, in his own way.

Listening tip. Hear the guitar without chords or melody: separate sounds that follow a logic of their own.
