Derek Bailey

Gitarist Derek Bailey uit Sheffield werkte jarenlang als musicus in dansorkesten, clubs en voor de televisie. Vanaf de jaren zestig liet hij dat los en ontwikkelde hij in Londen een radicaal vrije manier van spelen, waarin geen melodie, akkoordenschema of vaste maat meer voorkomt. Hij gebruikte grote sprongen, harmonischen en geluiden van de snaren. In 1970 richtte hij met Evan Parker en Tony Oxley het label Incus op, en vanaf 1976 organiseerde hij Company, wisselende groepen van improvisatoren. Zijn boek Improvisation (1980) is een standaardwerk. Op Ballads (2002) speelt hij juist bekende liedjes, op zijn eigen manier.
